For two decades, the Ioannina Lake Run has grown alongside Lake Pamvotis, becoming far more than a road race. It has become a meeting point between people, sport, landscape and the city of Ioannina, an event where running becomes a way of experiencing a place.

What began in 2007 as a local sporting initiative, inspired by runners who had long regarded the circuit of Lake Pamvotis as a personal challenge, has evolved into one of Greece’s distinctive running events.

From its first 200 participants, the event has steadily expanded, welcoming thousands of runners from across Greece and increasingly from abroad. In 2025, participation reached 7,000 runners.

The 2026 edition marks a particularly important moment: 20 years of Ioannina Lake Run. It is a moment to celebrate the people who built its history, the athletes, volunteers, organizers, supporters and local community while also looking decisively towards the future.

From a race to an experience

The identity of Ioannina Lake Run is inseparable from its setting.

Lake Pamvotis is not simply the backdrop to the race; it is part of its character. The flat route follows the lake and moves through a landscape where water, mountains, urban life and local culture meet. The experience is therefore as much about the sense of place as it is about performance.

The flagship 30 km Lake Run, together with the 30 km Power Walking, 10 km and 5 km races, creates a programme capable of welcoming experienced athletes, first-time participants, families and the wider community. The weekend also includes dedicated races for children, people with disabilities, families and younger participants, making the event genuinely multi-generational.

A new organizational perspective

As the event enters its third decade, its development is supported by a clear organizational vision.

The LIMNI Non-Profit Civil Partnership, based in Ioannina, has been responsible for the planning and organization of the Ioannina Lake Run since 2016. Its purpose extends beyond sport: to connect athletics with culture and the natural environment, promote Lake Pamvotis, strengthen sports tourism and encourage lifelong participation in sport.

This work continues in collaboration with A.O. Poseidon Ioannina, the historic local sports club from which the original Lake Run initiative emerged. Founded in 1991, Poseidon has developed a strong sporting presence in the city, including swimming, water polo and long-distance running.

The Lake Run itself was born from the enthusiasm and vision of members of the local running community, with George Danikas and Nick Mihos among its early pioneers.

Today, this partnership provides the event with a meaningful balance: sporting heritage on one side, and a broader cultural, environmental and destination-oriented vision on the other.

With the cooperation of the Municipality of Ioannina and the Region of Epirus, the organization is positioned not simply to stage an annual race, but to develop an event with a lasting impact on the city and its wider region.

Looking ahead

The next chapter of Ioannina Lake Run is about building on what already exists rather than starting from scratch.

Its strongest asset is its authenticity: a real city, a living lake, a distinctive landscape and a running community that has grown organically over twenty years.

The ambition now is to translate this heritage into an increasingly recognizable international event  one that combines sporting quality with environmental awareness, cultural identity, hospitality and the promotion of Ioannina as a destination.

The 20th anniversary therefore represents both a celebration and a transition.

It celebrates twenty years of shared effort and memories. At the same time, it opens the door to a new generation of ideas, partnerships and experiences around Lake Pamvotis.

Because ultimately, the Ioannina Lake Run is not measured only in kilometres, finish times or participation numbers.

It is measured in the relationship it creates between people and place.

One lake. One city. Twenty years of stories.
And a new route ahead.
