Daphne Valente was born in Athens, Greece and trained as a Fashion Designer at F.I.T. in N.Y. and St Martin’s school of Arts in London. She had a long and successful career in Greece, selling her Fortuny inspired, perfectly sculpted, sensual outfits to the elite of the Athenian society, until she rediscovered an old passion she cherished since childhood, designing hand-made, fashion jewelry. As an antidote to the acute economic crisis hitting Greece, she remained creative by focusing on all the positive aspects of her ancestral homeland and she produced a fun, colorful collection embracing the art of Trompe l'oeil. Her passion for detail is expressed in the way she approached this new project, lovingly cutting and combining cascading paper images of precious stones in colorful collages, creating majestic, tongue-in cheek, statement jewelry. These images are expertly printed on acrylic perspex, laser cut and shaped, in a high tech production unit, while later they are hand assembled using sterling silver findings and the finest metal coated semi precious stones. This witty collection is a manifestation that 'All that shines, is not gold', can be described as…'The Emperors new jewels' and after all … it’s just an illusion!
