Kalfayan Galleries were established in Thessaloniki in 1995 and in 2000 opened a space in Athens. With a particular interest in Greece, the Balkans and the MENASA region, the gallery has established a strong international profile through various projects, participations in art fairs and collaborations with museums and art institutions.
Kalfayan Galleries work with established Greek artists such as Stratos Kalafatis, Constantin Xenakis, as well as with young emerging artists such as Bill Balaskas, Emmanouil Bitsakis, Rania Bellou, Aikaterini Gegissian, Nina Papaconstantinou, Dimitris Tataris, Panos Tsagaris. A basic aspect of the gallery’s exhibition program is the presentation of the development of art in Greece through regular exhibitions of the most important post-war Greek artists, such as Alexis Akrithakis, Vlassis Caniaris, Nikos Kessanlis, Yiannis Gaitis and Yiannis Tsarouchis, among others.
The gallery’s roster reflects the unique character of acting as a bridge between Eastern and Western visual culture and includes Vartan Avakian (Lebanon), Ala Dehghan (Iran), Breda Beban (Serbia), Raed Yassin (Lebanon) and Hrair Sarkissian (Syria), among others, all of whom exhibit internationally.
One of the objectives of the gallery is to bring the Greek public into contact with internationally renowned artists through its exhibitions.  In 2008 Kalfayan Galleries introduced, for the first time in Greece, the work of Sister Corita (1918-1986), a significant representative of Pop Art in the United States during the ‘60s and ‘70s.  More recently, the gallery, in collaboration with the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art, presented a solo show of the internationally acclaimed Anna Boghiguian.  On this occasion, Catherine David was invited by the gallery to give a talk at the Benaki Museum on the artist’s work.
During 2010-2012, the gallery has had various collaborations with international institutions and museums such as TATE Modern (UK), Platform Garanti / SALT (Turkey), Mori Museum (Japan), Kunsthalle Wien (Austria), Modena Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena (Italy), Louis Vuitton Gallery/Hong Kong, Darat al Funun - The Khalid Shoman Foundation (Jordan), while gallery artists have been invited to exhibit in international shows such as Istanbul Biennial, Mardin Biennial, Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, Sharjah Biennial, Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Tampere Triennale, Venice Biennale of Architecture.
In 2011 the gallery artist Diohandi represented Greece at the 54th Venice Biennale. This year gallery artist Stefanos Tsivopoulos represents Greece with his solo show ‘History Zero’ at the 55th Venice Biennale.
