The story begins in 1890 when her great-grandfather opened the first factory handmade furniture in Greece.
The business is passed on to his two sons, Themistocles and Leonidas, who later separate and each continues a successful run separately.
Rozi Varagis is born in Athens in 1967.
She studied at Parsons School of Design. From 1988 to 2000 she worked in the family business. In 2000 she decides to open her own studio for Design & Special Structures.
Greece was going through a false economic prosperity phase at the time and buildings were popping up rapidly. Most of them without the consult of interior architects. Rozi designs interior spaces beginning at the very foundation of the construction all the way to the smallest detail. From concrete to ashtray, as she says.
At the same time, the excessive import of all kinds of furniture has caused a massification and tasteless uniformity.
In 2010 Rozi Varagis moves to Metaxourgio. There she sets up a traditional workshop where she creates handmade custom furniture and also undertakes furniture repair.
“My dream is a section (in the sense of knowledge) in the vestigial Greek furniture market.”
